Judge Riley started his extensive legal career as an Assistant District Attorney (1976-1982) in the Essex County Superior Court (Massachusetts) prosecuting capital and felony cases. In 1982, Judge Riley entered
private practice with the firm Cargill, Masterman & Culbert. In 1985, he established the firm of Riley, Burke & Donahue, LLP with a concentration on civil and criminal trials. Judge Riley was lead counsel in many
major personal injury and wrongful death cases in state and federal courts, representing defendants as well as plaintiffs. His civil practice involved the representation of clients in complex matters relating to
employment discrimination and civil rights claims... products liability claims (Ford truck rollovers; major and small household appliances; weapons/firearms; industrial machinery; hospital/ medical operating room

Judge Riley also represented clients in contract matters and disputes including employment contracts (union and
non-union), and executive compensation disputes. In 2002, Judge Riley was appointed as an Associate Justice of the Superior Court for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The Superior Court exercises general jurisdiction of Civil, Criminal, and Equity matters. Judge Riley retired from the bench in May 2010.

Judge Riley earned his J.D. from Suffolk University, Boston Massachusetts.
